ScotShot LLC - NRA Certified Pistol Instructor.
This is a National Rifle Association accredited and certificated course.
ABOUT NRA CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR TRAINING
NRA Certified Instructor training is designed for experienced, skilled shooters who are committed to passing on the correct Knowledge, Skills and Attitude to individuals who are motivated to seek firearms training. The courses teach Instructor Candidates the NRA instruction method of "Total Participant Involvement" (T.P.I.), with an emphasis on positive reinforcement and student development.
Upon achieving a passing grade (90% or higher) in the final Instructor Candidate examination, and with the recommendation of the Training Counselor leading the course, candidates will communicate with NRA directly on-line and pay the NRA fee for issuing the certification. This fee is not included in the ScotShot fee(s).
THIS COURSE HAS PRE-REQUISITES
To enter this course NRA Pistol Instructor Candidates must have completed the new ILT version of NRA Basic Pistol with a minimum 90% on the student exam and an ability to shoot a minimum 16/20 shooting qualification, at "Instructor" level, on demand. Please note that no other version (eg, "blended") of NRA Basic Pistol is acceptable. You should also have taken and passed the Basic Instructor Training (B.I.T., see below) module within the last two years. You should be functionally familiar with single- action and double-action revolvers and semi-automatic handguns, and be able to demonstrate safe gun handling at all times. The class requires a minimum of four Instructor Candidates to run (both B.I.T. and Certified Instructor).
THIS COURSE HAS OPTIONAL CONTENT
NRA has created an excellent on-line module that covers many elements of handgun shooting. You do not have to take this online module to enter our Instructor-Led class or complete it successfully. However you may find it enriches the "NRA Instructor-Led Basics of Pistol Shooting" class. As an Instructor Candidate, this is particularly true. Please note that there is an additional fee for this online module, paid directly to the NRA. You can access this course, which is on the NRA website, here.
WHAT THIS COURSE IS FOR
This is the NRA's flagship Pistol Class. Its purpose is to develop a safety mindset, familiarity with handguns, and introduce basic elements of handgun marksmanship. Certificates will be mailed to successful participants. Instructor candidates need to pass the class at 90% or better.
PART 1: NRA BASIC INSTRUCTOR TRAINING - B.I.T.
In this first part, Instructor Candidates learn about the core skills required to teach NRA student-level courses, such as: introduction of speakers, use of visual and other teaching aids, the ethics of running a class and working with minor children, and how to plan, promote and advertise an NRA class. If obtained within two years of the discipline part (eg, below), then B.I.T. does not have to be retaken in order to add additional disciplines (however, ScotShot requires all Instructor Candidates to refresh themselves by resitting the B.I.T. examination). Instructor Candidates work in teams, alternating between presenting elements of the course to the other candidates, who offer constructive critiques, and playing the role of the students. Please note that the B.I.T. is not a certification in and of itself - but it must be passed in order to obtain a discipline certification. Please do not bring a firearm or ammunition to this class. Everything will be provided.
PART 2: NRA CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR - PISTOL
NRA Certified Pistol Instructors are able to qualify students in the NRA "Basics of Pistol Shooting, Instructor Led Training" class. This course teaches Instructor Candidates how to present and evaluate the various exercises necessary to do this, with the understanding that ILT Basic Pistol is an objectives-based class for students. Working in teams, Pistol Instructor Candidates will become familiar with the three NRA rules for Safe Gun Handling and how to apply them carefully throughout their classes. They will be able to demonstrate how pistols function and the fundamentals of pistol shooting. This entails having a keen working knowledge of the three major pistol action types: single-action revolver, double-action revolver and semi-automatic pistol (and its common variants). On the range, Instructor Candidates will use the "Coach and Pupil" method to refine one anothers' skills in teaching a beginner student in their first shots with a pistol, and work with them to achieve the minimum qualifying marksmanship standard for NRA Basic Pistol. They will learn how to use the new NRA skills evaluation form, and how to use the process of evaluation to ensure that learning has taken place and that the students' knowledge base increased appropriately.
