ABOUT THE SCOTSHOT HANDGUN COURSE
ScotShot Handgun I - IV is a modularized Handgun course designed to take the student from novice to accomplished.
SCOTSHOT HANDGUN-II; PISTOL BASICS, ENHANCED ©
ScotShot Handgun-II is a Basic Level course. It is a 6 hr course that has 3 hrs of classroom time and 2 hrs of range time, with an hour for lunch, discussion and range safety briefing. The purpose of Handgun-II is to extend Handgun-I and provide a thorough understanding of how your firearm works in relation to your body. We extend shooting techniques and exercises, and introduce defensive shooting.
WHAT THIS COURSE IS FOR
This class is suitable for beginners who own their own firearm, experienced novices and more experienced shooters. It is also ideal for those who want a refresher with their new firearm, and experienced shooters who have been away from the sport for a while. Its purpose is to make people familiar with the parts and function of their own handguns, and to prepare them for more advanced training and gun-handling concepts.
WHAT THIS COURSE CONTAINS
We cover and review: firearm safety; the rules for safe gun handling and the safe direction. We then practice field-stripping and reassembling your handgun, and discuss the need for cleaning, and how to properly clean and lubricate a handgun. We review the 5 fundamentals of shooting a handgun. We discuss how the various parts of the handgun work together during firing. We describe how to pick up the gun safely and correctly, and present it to target using double-handed and single-handed grips, on the strong side and on the support side. We discuss the critical relationship between your handgun and your hands and arms. We discuss the "workspace" concept and illustrate it with "lock-back" and "hot" reloading. Finally we demonstrate the three most common handgun malfunctions - the misfire, the failure to eject (aka the "stovepipe") and the failure to extract (aka the "doublefeed") - and how to clear them and return to a ready condition. On the range, we start with the "one-hole drill", progress to the "four-hand drill" ©, and contrast these with defensive accuracy. We conclude the range exercises with an introduction to shooting under pressure, requiring that students process multiple information streams while continuing to get shots on target effectively.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
Students should bring their own NJ-legal semi-automatic handgun, two magazines and 150 rounds of store-bought, factory-loaded ammunition. Hand-loaded ammunition is specifically prohibited. Preferably you will have taken ScotShot Handgun-I ©, NRA Basic Pistol, NRA FIRST Steps Pistol, or some other introductory handgun class. You should be familiar with firing your handgun and able to load and unload magazines. We expect that you will already have your preferred eye-protection and ear-protection. You should also bring a willingness to learn, a desire to succeed and an open mind. If there is someone in your home (eg partner, spouse or older child) who will be using your firearm in your presence and under your direct supervision, then please consider having them register for the class and learn with you. While this is not a class for the brand-new shooter or complete novice, it is beginner level and can be taken by adults and supervised older children.
WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY
We provide all training materials, including non-functioning, training ammunition for the classroom. We provide classroom and range facilities, including targets. We also provide coffee, water and assorted snacks, however, you should bring a light lunch. At the end of the course, we issue a Certificate of Training to those who meet the necessary standard of safe attitude and safe gun handling. This can serve as "Proof of Training" for the popular Florida Concealed Weapons Permit application. Most of all, you'll take away some strong ideas for training to improve your shooting in terms of ability and versatility, a deep working knowledge of your handgun, an understanding of the biomechanics of handgun shooting, and a follow-up plan to develop your shooting strengths and address your shooting weaknesses.
