ABOUT THE SCOTSHOT HANDGUN COURSE
ScotShot Handgun I - IV is a modularized Handgun course designed to take the student from novice to accomplished.
SCOTSHOT HANDGUN-III; MOVING, SHOOTING, MULTIPLE THREATS, and CONCEALMENT and COVER ©.
ScotShot Handgun-III is an Intermediate Level course. It is a 7 hr course that has 3 hrs of classroom time and 3 hrs of range time, with an hour for lunch, discussion and range safety briefing. The purpose of Handgun-III is to extend Handgun-I and Handgun-II, and provide a thorough understanding of the similarities and differences between "concealment" and "cover". We extend shooting techniques and exercises, to include moving with a handgun and addressing multiple threats.
WHAT THIS COURSE IS FOR
This class is suitable for enthusiastic and fluent handgun shooters who own their own firearm, and are experienced and comfortable with "running" their handgun, and who want to advance their handgun ability towards a more defensive skillset. Its purpose is to make people familiar with using their environment defensively in a multi-threat situation.
WHAT THIS COURSE CONTAINS
In the classroom, we review the core firearms safety rules, and review material from Handgun-I and Handgun-II. We review the fundamentals of shooting a handgun. We consider the concepts of "concealment" and "cover", and relationship between them. We work on the basics of how to use them inside and outside one's home and the concept of "slicing the pie". We discuss how multiple threats can look from different perspectives, and strategies for prioritizing them. We consider how to move safely with a loaded, "hot", handgun. On the range, we address multiple threats; first from different stationary positions, and then while moving. Next, we introduce concealment/cover to this and practice some basic strategies to use it defensively, while remaining target-aware. We conclude the range exercises with a return to shooting under pressure, requiring that students process multiple and conflicting information streams while continuing to get shots on target effectively.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
Students should bring their own NJ-legal semi-automatic handgun, two magazines and 250 rounds of store-bought, factory-loaded ammunition. Hand-loaded ammunition is specifically prohibited. Preferably you will have taken ScotShot Handgun-I, Handgun-II ©, NRA Basic Pistol, NRA Personal Protection Inside the Home, or some other intermediate handgun class. You should be familiar with firing your handgun and able to load and unload magazines, as well as load it and keep it functioning as required. We expect that you will already have your preferred eye-protection and ear-protection. You should also bring a willingness to learn, a desire to succeed and an open mind. If there is someone in your home (eg partner, spouse or older child) who will be using your firearm in your presence and under your direct supervision, or in an emergency, then please consider having them register for the class and learn with you. This is not a class for the brand-new shooter or complete novice, it is intermediate level and requires existing skillsets to gain most benefit. It can be taken by adults and supervised older children.
WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY
We provide all training materials, including non-functioning, training ammunition for the classroom. We provide classroom and range facilities, including targets. We also provide coffee, water and assorted snacks, however, you should bring a light lunch. At the end of the course, we issue a Certificate of Training to those who meet the necessary standard of safe attitude and safe gun handling. This can serve as "Proof of Training" for the popular Florida Concealed Weapons Permit application. Most of all, you'll take away some strong ideas for training to improve your shooting in terms of ability and versatility, a deep working knowledge of your handgun, an understanding of its use in a multi-threat, complex environment, and a follow-up plan to develop your shooting strengths and address your shooting weaknesses.
